RESUMO

We report the first record of the occurrence of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1823) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), an economically important pest of bananas (Musa spp.), from Fifa Mountains in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, we recorded the first observation of damage caused to bananas by C. sordidus in a banana farm in Jazan Province, southwestern Saudi Arabia, in March 2022. Molecular characterization using DNA sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene confirmed the morphological identification of C. sordidus. This discovery is considered a warning notice to prevent the potential establishment and spread of this dangerous pest in the banana cultivation regions in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, it is recommended that detection and monitoring of banana weevil should be undertaken in Saudi banana farms in order to restrict the dissemination of this weevil to other banana cultivation areas.

The impacts of enzymatically produced acylglycerol and glycerin monostearate on the characteristics of gelatin-stabilized omega-3 emulsions and microcapsules were investigated. Tuna oil was enzymatically produced and the resulting acylglycerol was mixed with tuna oil at 12.5% (w/w) to prepare a novel oil phase. This oil phase was stabilized by gelatin to prepare oil-in-water emulsions and subsequent microcapsules via complex coacervation. The tuna oil with glycerin monostearate (GMS) at 1 and 2% (w/w) were used as controls. Results showed that both acylglycerol and GMS significantly reduced the emulsion droplet size and zeta potential, while increasing the viscoelasticity and stability. The diacylglycerol/monoacylglycerol were involved in the oil/water interfacial layer formation by lowering interfacial tension and increasing droplet surface hydrophobicity. Overall, the changed emulsion properties promoted the complex coacervation and contributed to the formation of microcapsules with improved oxidative stability. Therefore, enzymatically produced acylglycerol can develop high-quality stable omega-3 microencapsulated novel food ingredients.

Aim: The study was designed to develop and analyze curcumin nanoparticles. Methods: Curcumin nanoparticles were formulated and evaluated. Their efficacy in protecting against brain damage was investigated in a rat model of ischemic stroke, considering motor function, muscle strength and antioxidant enzyme activity. Results: Curcumin nanoparticles displayed a zeta potential of -55 ± 13.5 mV and an average particle size of 51.40 ± 21.70 nm. In ischemic stroke rat models, curcumin nanoparticle treatment significantly improved motor functions, and muscle strength and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase and catalase, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Conclusion: Curcumin nanoparticles showed significant neuroprotective effects in ischemic stroke models.

In anurans, acoustic communication is the most important form of communication at the interspecific and intraspecific levels. Acoustic diagnostic features may be a potential alternative to morphometric and molecular diagnostics. Here, we assessed the variations in advertisement calls between two sympatric species, Boulenophrys leishanensis and Boulenophrys spinata, that share their breeding season and breeding sites. In addition, we investigated any potential relationships between call parameters and body size. We found that the advertisement calls of both species are simple calls. The two species exhibited significant differences in all call parameters. Both B. leishanensis and B. spinata showed a significant negative correlation with their body size on dominant frequency. These differences in call parameters may play an important role in interspecific recognition. Additionally, because intraspecific acoustic variation reflects body size, calls may be relevant for sexual selection. Our study supports the acoustic niche hypothesis and the morphological constraint hypothesis and calls are a valid tool for distinguishing between the two species of Boulenophrys in the field.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychological disorder that occurs in children and is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Early and accurate diagnosis of ADHD is very important for effective intervention. The aim of this study is to develop a computer-aided approach to detecting ADHD using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Specifically, we explore a Gabor filter-based statistical features approach for the classification of EEG signals into ADHD and healthy control (HC). The EEG signal is processed by a bank of Gabor filters to obtain narrow-band signals. Subsequently, a set of statistical features is extracted. The computed features are then subjected to feature selection. Finally, the obtained feature vector is given to a classifier to detect ADHD and HC. Our approach achieves the highest classification accuracy of 96.4% on a publicly available dataset. Furthermore, our approach demonstrates better classification accuracy than the existing methods.

The chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of Mussaenda pubescens, a promising resource that is used as a traditional medicine and drink, is important for understanding the phylogenetic relationships among the Mussaenda family and genetic improvement and reservation. This research represented the first comprehensive description of the morphological characteristics of M. pubescens, as well as an analysis of the complete cp genome and phylogenetic relationship. The results indicated a close relationship between M. pubescens and M. hirsutula based on the morphological characteristics of the flower and leaves. The cp was sequenced using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. The results indicated the cp genome of M. pubescens spanned a total length of 155,122 bp, including a pair of inverted repeats (IRA and IRB) with a length of 25,871 bp for each region, as well as a large single-copy (LSC) region and a small single-copy (SSC) region with lengths of 85,370 bp and 18,010 bp, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that species within the same genus displayed a tendency to group closely together. It was suggested that Antirhea, Cinchona, Mitragyna, Neolamarckia, and Uncaria might have experienced an early divergence. Furthermore, M. hirsutula showed a close genetic connection to M. pubescens, with the two species having partially overlapping distributions in China. This study presents crucial findings regarding the identification, evolution, and phylogenetic research on Mussaenda plants, specifically targeting M. pubescens.

Cannabis sativa L., previously concealed by prohibition, is now a versatile and promising plant, thanks to recent legalization, opening doors for medical research and industry growth. However, years of prohibition have left the Cannabis research community lagging behind in understanding Cannabis genetics and trait inheritance compared to other major crops. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) of nine key agronomic and morphological traits, using a panel of 176 drug-type Cannabis accessions from the Canadian legal market. Utilizing high-density genotyping-by-sequencing (HD-GBS), we successfully generated dense genotyping data in Cannabis, resulting in a catalog of 800 K genetic variants, of which 282 K common variants were retained for GWAS analysis. Through GWAS analysis, we identified 18 markers significantly associated with agronomic and morphological traits. Several identified markers exert a substantial phenotypic impact, guided us to putative candidate genes that reside in high linkage-disequilibrium (LD) with the markers. These findings lay a solid foundation for an innovative cannabis research, leveraging genetic markers to inform breeding programs aimed at meeting diverse needs in the industry.

Precise morphology acquisition for the variable wing leading edge is essential for its bio-inspired adaptive control. Therefore, this study proposes a morphological reconstruction method for the variable wing leading edge, utilizing the node curvature vectors-based curvature propagation method (NCV-CPM). By establishing a strain-arc curvature function, the method fundamentally mitigates the impact of surface curvature angle on curvature computation accuracy at sensing points. We introduce a technique that uses high-order curvature fitting functions to determine the curvature vectors of arc segment nodes. This method reduces cumulative errors in curvature computation linked to the linear interpolation-based curvature propagation method (LI-CPM) at unattached sensor positions. Integrating curvature-strain functions aids in wing leading-edge strain field reconstruction, supporting structural health monitoring. Additionally, a particle swarm algorithm optimizes the sensing point distribution, reducing network complexity. This study demonstrates significantly enhanced morphological reconstruction accuracy compared to those obtained with conventional LI-CPM.

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease, exhibiting diverse subtypes according to the characteristics of tumour cells. The immunophenotype is one of the aspects acquired routinely through flow cytometry in the diagnosis of AML. Here, we characterized the antigen expression in paediatric AML cases across both morphological and molecular genetic subgroups. We discovered a subgroup of patients with unfavourable prognosis that can be immunologically characterized, irrespective of morphological FAB results or genetic aberrations. Cox regression analysis unveiled key antigens influencing the prognosis of AML patients. In terms of underlying genotypes, we observed that the antigenic profiles and outcomes of one specific group, primarily composed of CBFA2T3::GLIS2 and FUS::ERG, were analogous to the reported RAM phenotype. Overall, our data highlight the significance of immunophenotype to tailor treatment for paediatric AML.

Harnessing complex body dynamics has long been a challenge in robotics, particularly when dealing with soft dynamics, which exhibit high complexity in interacting with the environment. Recent studies indicate that these dynamics can be used as a computational resource, exemplified by the McKibben pneumatic artificial muscle, a common soft actuator. This study demonstrates that bifurcations, including periodic and chaotic dynamics, can be embedded into the pneumatic artificial muscle, with the entire bifurcation structure using the framework of physical reservoir computing. These results suggest that dynamics not present in training data can be embedded through bifurcation embedment, implying the capability to incorporate various qualitatively different patterns into pneumatic artificial muscle without the need to design and learn all required patterns explicitly. Thus, this study introduces a novel approach to simplify robotic devices and control training by reducing reliance on external pattern generators and the amount and types of training data needed for control.

The lipase (LA) and peroxidase (POD) activities, as well as morphological structure, physicochemical and digestion properties of sand rice flour (SRF) treated with superheated steam (SS), were investigated. SS treatment at 165 °C completely deactivated LA and resulted in a 98% deactivation of POD activities in SRF. This treatment also intensified gelatinization, induced noticeable color alterations, and decreased pasting viscosities. Furthermore, there was a moderate reduction in crystal structure, lamellar structure, and short-range ordered structure, with a pronounced reduction at temperatures exceeding 170 °C. These alterations significantly impacted SRF digestibility, leading to increased levels of rapidly digestible starch (RDS) and resistant starch (RS), with the highest RS content achieved at 165 °C. The effectiveness of SS treatment depends on temperature, with 165 °C being able to stabilize SRF with moderate changes in color and structure. These findings will provide a scientific foundation for SS applicated in SRF stabilization and modification.

Colonization of a novel geographic area is a classic source of ecological opportunity. Likewise, complex microhabitats are thought to promote biodiversity. We sought to reconcile these two predictions when they are naturally opposing outcomes. We assess the macroevolutionary consequences of an ancestral shift from benthic to pelagic microhabitat zones on rates of speciation and phenotypic evolution in North American minnows. Pelagic species have more similar phenotypes and slower rates of phenotypic evolution, but faster speciation rates, than benthic species. These are likely two independent, opposing responses to specialization along the benthic-pelagic axis, as rates of phenotypic evolution and speciation are not directly correlated. The pelagic zone is more structurally homogenous and offers less ecological opportunity, acting as an ecological dead end for minnows. In contrast, pelagic species may be more mobile and prone to dispersal and subsequent geographic isolation and, consequently, experience elevated instances of allopatric speciation. Microhabitat shifts can have decoupled effects on different dimensions of biodiversity, highlighting the need for nuance when interpreting the macroevolutionary consequences of ecological opportunity.

Processing of Chinese medicinal materials is an important part in the Chinese medicine heritage, and the temperature control in the processing has a direct impact on the quality and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicines. However, the processing of Chinese medicinal materials has the problems of subjective temperature judgement, determination of the end point based on experience, unclear processing mechanism, unstable quality of products, and inconsistent processing standards. The temperature control in the processing is reflected in the appearance and internal quality of Chinese medicinal materials. The theory of quality evaluation through morphological identification is developed based on the comprehensive evaluation of the shape, color, taste, and components, which is associated with the temperature control in the processing. To solve the problems above, this paper puts forward the following solutions. The first is literature mining. By review of the ancient medical works and pharmaceutical experience, the temperature control in processing and the evolution of processing methods can be revealed. Second, according to the ancient method, the processing principle can be explored, on the basis of which the processing technology can be innovated. Third, the standard operating procedure(SOP) should be established to quantify the fire temperature, providing a theoretical basis for the formulation of Chinese medicinal material processing standards. Moreover, it provides a basis for improving the quality of processed products and increasing the safety and effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicines.

Eight ticks were found in Comacchio (FE), Italy parasitizing a young black iguana (Ctenosaura similis) that had been accidentally transported in a commercial plant container from Costa Rica. Specimens were identified morphologically as Amblyomma scutatum and then confirmed by the barcoding of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. Amblyomma scutatum is a common tick known to infest reptiles in Central America, Mexico, and Venezuela, but not in Europe. In Italy, the possibility for this tick to become endemic is unlikely because of the absence of its principal hosts. Nevertheless, this finding confirms the high risk of introducing exotic species that is linked with global commerce and therefore the need for veterinary control of shipments.

We inventoried all nine species of the 'Acanthephyra purpurea' complex, one of the most abundant and cosmopolitan group of mesopelagic shrimps. We used 119 specimens at hand and genetic data for 124 specimens from GenBank and BOLD. Phylogenetic analysis of four genes (COI, 16S, NaK, and enolase) showed that the 'Acanthephyra purpurea' complex is polyphyletic and encompasses two species groups, 'A. purpurea' (mostly Atlantic) and 'A. smithi' (Indo-West Pacific). The 'A. purpurea' species group consists of two major molecular clades A. pelagica and A. kingsleyi - A. purpurea - A. quadrispinosa. Molecular data suggest that hitherto accepted species A. acanthitelsonis, A. pelagica, and A. sica should be considered as synonyms. The Atlantic is inhabited by at least two cryptic genetic lineages of A. pelagica and A. quadrispinosa. Morphological analyses of qualitative and quantitative (900 measurements) characters resulted in a tabular key to species and in a finding of four evolutionary traits. Atlantic species showed various scenarios of diversification visible on mitochondrial gene level, nuclear gene level, and morphological level. We recorded and discussed similar phylogeographic trends in diversification and in distribution of genetic lineages within two different clades: A. pelagica and A. kingsleyi - A. purpurea - A. quadrispinosa.

BACKGROUND: The muscles present in the pelvic girdle compartment demonstrate clinically significant anatomical variation regarding both their site of attachment and additions, such as accessory heads, muscles or tendinous slips. Many of those variations might be considered potential traps during ultrasound examination that may result in misdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to raise awareness of such possibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search for morphological variations was performed in PubMed and NIH. Relevant papers were listed and citation tracking was accomplished. RESULTS: Although several anatomical variations of pelvic girdle muscles have been presented, few studies have examined their relevance in ultrasound imaging. CONCLUSIONS: The morphological variability of the pelvic girdle muscles does not vary from such incidence in other regions of the human body; however further ultrasound studies are needed of the numerous morphological variants that can be found in this region.

Fish typically adapt to their environment through evolutionary traits, and this adaptive strategy plays a critical role in promoting species diversity. Onychostoma macrolepis is a rare and endangered wild species that exhibits a life history of overwintering in caves and breeding in mountain streams. We analyzed the morphological characteristics, histological structure, and expression of circadian clock genes in O. macrolepis to elucidate its adaptive strategies to environmental changes in this study. The results showed that the relative values of O. macrolepis eye diameter, body height, and caudal peduncle height enlarged significantly during the breeding period. The outer layer of the heart was dense; the ventricular myocardial wall was thickened; the fat was accumulated in the liver cells; the red and white pulp structures of the spleen, renal tubules, and glomeruli were increased; and the goblet cells of the intestine were decreased in the breeding period. In addition, the spermatogenic cyst contained mature sperm, and the ovaries were filled with eggs at various stages of development. Throughout the overwintering period, the melano-macrophage center is located between the spleen and kidney, and the melano-macrophage center in the cytoplasm has the ability to synthesize melanin, and is arranged in clusters to form cell clusters or white pulp scattered in it. Circadian clock genes were identified in all organs, exhibiting significant differences between the before/after overwintering period and the breeding period. These findings indicate that the environment plays an important role in shaping the behavior of O. macrolepis, helping the animals to build self-defense mechanisms during cyclical habitat changes. Studying the morphological, histological structure and circadian clock gene expression of O. macrolepis during the overwintering and breeding periods is beneficial for understanding its unique hibernation behavior in caves. Additionally, it provides an excellent biological sample for investigating the environmental adaptability of atypical cavefish species.

Cause of death is defined as a natural disease or injury that led to physiologic changes resulting in death. Manner of death refers to the circumstances surrounding death. Decomposition, especially in advanced stages, creates difficulties in post-mortem examination for it encompasses the processes that lead to the loss of important observable findings and features. Traumatic injuries observed in decomposed cadavers might be analyzed by their vital features and significance for the occurrence of fatal outcomes that help determine the cause and manner of death. An almost fully skeletonized cadaver was admitted to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Deontology at The Medical University, Sofia, Bulgaria. Along with the obligation to answer the post-mortem interval, what were the anthropological and biological features, the cause and manner of death had to be determined in order to classify the case as criminal or not. The cause of death was established by the morphological finding - gunshot injury of the head, passing the brain. The manner of death remained undetermined because of the absence of soft tissues in the areas of the injuries. It was concluded that there was no sufficient forensic data to answer if it was suicide, homicide, or even an accident.

The pseudo-natural product (pseudo-NP) concept aims to combine NP fragments in arrangements that are not accessible through known biosynthetic pathways. The resulting compounds retain the biological relevance of NPs but are not yet linked to bioactivities and may therefore be best evaluated by unbiased screening methods resulting in the identification of unexpected or unprecedented bioactivities. Herein, various NP fragments are combined with a tricyclic core connectivity via interrupted Fischer indole and indole dearomatization reactions to provide a collection of highly three-dimensional pseudo-NPs. Target hypothesis generation by morphological profiling via the cell painting assay guides the identification of an unprecedented chemotype for Aurora kinase inhibition with both its relatively highly 3D structure and its physicochemical properties being very different from known inhibitors. Biochemical and cell biological characterization indicate that the phenotype identified by the cell painting assay corresponds to the inhibition of Aurora kinase B.

Purpose: The hand motor cortex (HMC) is a reliable anatomical landmark for identifying the precentral gyrus. The current study aimed to investigate the morphology of HMC on axial MRI of glioma patients, propose a new morphological classification of HMC and analyze the effect of tumors on the morphology of HMC. Methods: A retrospective study of 276 adult right-handed glioma patients was conducted. The morphology of HMC was assessed using T2 axial images. Subsequently, the distribution of morphological subtypes was compared between the bilateral hemispheres and the tumor-affected and healthy hemispheres. Finally, the influence of tumor pathology on the morphology of HMC was investigated. Results: A new morphological classification of HMC with four subtypes (Ω, ε, Ω-ε and ε-Ω) was proposed. No significant difference was identified in the distribution of morphological subtypes between the bilateral hemispheres (p = 0.0901, Chi-square test), or between the tumor-affected and healthy hemispheres (p = 0.3507, Chi-square test), and the morphology of HMC between the bilateral hemispheres were consistent (p < 0.0001, Kappa test). In addition, a significant difference was identified in the distribution of morphological subtypes between astrocytic and oligodendroglial tumors (p = 0.0135, Chi-square test). Conclusion: In the current study, we proposed a new morphological classification of HMC, and found that tumor could affect the morphology of HMC in glioma patients. The results can help our clinical practice, enabling us to further understand the spatial structure of the cerebral hemispheres.
